Shopping & Food

Shopping
In Bali, you can go shopping for fine art and handicrafts such as antique, semi-antique and modern furniture, paintings, delicately crafted gold and silver jewelry, wood and stone carvings, woven and dyed fabrics. These are available in many shops in the Kuta and Legian area, in Sanur, in various handicraft villages.

Beach wear, T-shirts, pants, shoes, leather goods, sea shells, trinkets are also very popular and they are offered at low prices in numerous shops in Kuta and Legian. Well-known shopping centers include "Geneva" in Seminyak for easy-on-the-pocket handicrafts, "Kuta Square" with many shops offering everything a tourist could possibly be interested in, and "Bali Galeria" behind the DFS Komplex where you find many different outlets including Vinoti, Prada, Body Shop, Planet Sport etc.

In most of the local shops, bargaining is customary. The art of is to start at half the asking price and slowly increase your offer until a compromise is reached. Remember it helps to smile while bargaining.

Food
On this paradise island, you can get whatever delicacies that you can imagine, from Chinese Smoked Duck to spicy Thai Tom Yam, from German Wurst to Russian Borscht, from Italian Pizza to Spanish Tapas, from Japanese Sushi to Korean Bulgogi Beef, from Mexican Enchiladas to Indian Tandoori Chicken, you name it.

If you are an adventurous explorer, local Indonesian cooking will bring a lot of surprise. Famous Indonesian delicacies include 'Sate', charcoal-grilled skewers with small pieces of chicken, beef, pork, prawns or minced seafood served with a peanut sauce, 'Gado-Gado', a half-boiled combination of various vegetables with peanut sauce and 'Nasi Goreng', tasty fried rice with either meat or shrimps. There are two traditional Balinese dishes that you should not miss: "Babi Guling", crispy pieces of grilled suckling pig, and the "Bebek Betutu", a delicious duck specialty slowly baked in banana leaves together with numerous herbs and spices.

For Indonesian "High Cuisine", visit the restaurant KETUPAT in Kuta. For a down-to-earth experience of Indonesian food you should visit the night markets. For a dollar or so you can try different "Sate" and many other local delicacies.
