PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare contrast sensitivity between patients bilaterally implanted with a newer generation accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) and a monofocal IOL.
METHODS: Cataract surgery was performed on patients with bilateral cataracts and were implanted with an accommodating IOL (Crystalens HD). These patients were compared to matched group receiving a monofocal IOL (Akreos MI60, Acri.Tec 46LC, Acrysof SN60WF). Post-operative acuity at 100%, 25% and 12.5% contrast were determined using the CSV-1000.
RESULTS: Twenty eyes of 10 patients were implanted with the Crystalens HD and 18 eyes of 9 patients received a monofocal IOL. There was no difference in the post operative acuity of both groups at 100% contrast. No significant vision loss was observed with a change in contrast from 100% to 12.5%.
CONCLUSION: Accommodating IOLs provide similar post-operative visual acuity to monofocal IOLs and no significant loss in vision with decreasing contrast.
