Objective: To evaluate the role of silicone oil in the therapeutic vitrectomy for bacterial endogenous vitrectomy.
Patients and Method: A randomized clinical trial has been conducted in Viet Nam National Institute of Ophthalmology from August 2008 to October2010. 71 were enrolled in this study and randomly assigned into 2 groups: group 1: early vitrectomy and goup 2: early vitrectomy with silicone temponade.
Results: There were 35 patients in group 1 and 36 patients in group 2. The baseline clinical and paraclinical characteristics were very similar between 2 groups. There were more males than females (45/26). At the final follow up (9 months after the surgery) the functional result of group 2 was significantly better than group 1 (p=0.044). There were also fewer devastating complications (such as retinal vascular occlusion, inoperable retinal detachment, phthisis bulbi) in goup 2 (p=0.039).
Conclusions: Silicone oil played an important role in the improvement of functional outcome after the therapeutic vitrectomy for bacterial endogenous endophthalmitis
