Phacoemulsification is now the standard technique for cataract extraction. However, there are situations where we have to resort to other techniques. The Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) is one such alternative offering superior outcomes than ECCE, not only as a planned procedure, but also as a bail out technique from failed Phaco. Although SICS has become extremely important in the sub continent where high volume surgery is the norm, transfer of the technique to other regions where phacoemulsification is routinely performed has been slow.

This presentation with discuss the key issues to be considered by a phaco surgeon when learning the surgical techniques of SICS.

  1. Indications, advantages & situations where SICS is beneficial over ECCE and Phaco.

  2. Surgical technique where all details of wound construction, capsule management and nucleus management and delivery technique will be explained in detail. In addition all complications at every step of this technique and their management will be reviewed and covered.

  3. Dealing with difficult situations (Co morbidity) by the SICS technique e.g. Hard Brunescent Cataracts, Small pupils (with and without Iris hooks) and co-existent glaucoma surgery will be dealt with.

All topics will be extensively illustrated by both video clips and animations in order for the audience to understand comprehensively the technique, its advantages and also to handle complications and complicated scenarios.
