Evaluation of a new excimer treatment for presbyopia
Prasad Reddy
Purpose: Investigation into the clinical outcomes using the SUPRACOR excimer-based algorithm (Technolas Perfect Vision) for the treatment of presbyopia in hyperopic, myopic, pseudophakic and post-LASIK patients. SUPRACOR is designed to treat presbyopia without inducing unwanted aberrations inside the pupil region.
Methods: In this single surgeon, single centre study, 36 presbyopic eyes were treated with the SUPRACOR algorithm. The entire procedure was performed using the TECHNOLAS 217P excimer laser (Technolas Perfect Vision). Measured outcomes included uncorrected and best corrected visual acuities, refraction, patient satisfaction and complications.
Results: Initial outcomes on the 36 patients, find the treatment effectively treats the presbyopia. All patients gained lines in near vision, with a mean gain of 5.5 to 6 lines at 1 month and 3month follow-up. The treatment had a minimal effect on the best corrected distance visual acuity compared to pre-op. To date, no complications have occurred. Further 6 and 12 month follow-up data will be presented.
Conclusion: Preliminary results indicate SUPRACOR is a safe and effective treatment for presbyopia.
