Small Aperture Corneal Inlay To Treat Presybopia In Emmetropes And In Combination With LASIK For Eyes With Refractive Error

Michael Knorz

Purpose: Evaluate the performance of a small aperture corneal inlay in the treatment of presbyopia.

Methods: The Kamra corneal inlay (AcuFocus Inc) was implanted monocularly in the non-dominant eye. One group of implant patients were emmetropic (EM, n=507), and the second group had concurrent LASIK to correct refractive errors combined with monocular implantation of the corneal inlay (CM, n=60). Mean uncorrected distance (UCDVA), intermediate (UCIVA), and near (UCNVA) visual acuities were assessed for each group. Follow-up was at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.

Results: From 3 months to 1 year, the implanted eye of the EM and CM groups achieved a mean UCDVA between 20/20 and 20/25. UCIVA was between 20/25 and 20/32 from 1 month to 12 months for the EM and CM groups. Finally, at 1 year, the UCNVA for the EM and CM groups was J2.

Conclusion: The Kamra small aperture inlay provided excellent uncorrected distance and near visual acuity out to one year postoperatively in emmetropes and when combined with LASIK to correct distance refractive error.
