Referral Patterns of Uveitis in a Tertiary Center in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia

Purpose: To determine the causes of uveitis in the western region of Saudi Arabia.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of the records of patients with uveitis referred to uveitis clinic from 1999 to 2008.

Results: We encountered 519 patients with uveitis among 50000 new cases. The prevalence of uveitis was 1% 246/519 (47.4%) had acute idiopathic anterior uveitis, 44/519 (8.4%) had Behcet's disease, 38/519 (7.3%) has Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, 33/519 (6.3%) had toxoplasmosis, 19/519 (3.6%) had Fuchs hetero-chromic iridocyclitis, 12/519 (2.3%) had ankylosing spondylitis, 40/519 (7%) had idiopathic intermediate uveitis, 312/519 (60%) had anterior uveitis.

Conclusion: The most common cause of uveitis was found to be idiopathic anterior uveitis, followed by Behcet's disease and VKH.
