Objective To study the changes of positive rate of bacterial culture and drug sensitivity test of secretion specimens from the inferior palpebral conjunctival surface of neonate with acute bacterial conjunctivitis and search for sensitive antibiotics for its treatment.

Methods secretion specimens were taken from 97 eyes of 67 cases with clinically diagnosed acute bacterial neonatal conjunctivitis for bacterial culture, and drug sensitivity test was carried out for specimens with positive culture results.

Results Bacterial positive rate was 78.4% with insignificant changes among the different years. The main bacteria spectrum of acute neonatal conjunctivitis has changed from Staphylococcus aureus、Streptococcus viridans to Staphylococcus epidermidais、Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Neisseria gonorrhoeae . Ciprofloxacin was the most sensitive antibiotics . Most bacteria were resistant to chloromycetin.

Conclusion Bacterial culture combined with drug sensitivity test of secretion specimens from the inferior palpebral conjunctival surface is important in guiding the treatment of the acute bacterial neonatal conjunctivitis. They are beneficial not only to clinical treatment, but also to guide clinical practice in preventing antibiotics abuse and spreading of resistant bacteria strains.

Key words: neonate ,bacterial,conjunctivitis;bacterial culture
