Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare between a conventional SICS with an SICS using phacoincisions.

Methods: Patients were randomly operated using the two different surgical techniques by a single surgeon. Intraoperative complications and post op complications were noted on day 1, 4, 14 and 30. Statistical techniques were used to analyse the data and assess the difference in the outcome of the procedures.

Results: Initial results reflect that there is no difference in the outcome of the two procedures. The complication rate and outcome is dependent on the surgeon expertise.

Conclusion: Both the techniques can be successfully used to perform SICS however the newer technique is relatively easy to master and allows the surgeon to convert a phaco surgery into an SICS if required.
