Preipheral Chop for the Hard

Dr Sajjad Fazili

Breaking the back of a hard leathery cataract safely is the final frontier of a phaco surgeon. An alternative surgical technique of a peripheral chop is described , in which the hold with the phaco tip is off center , nearer to the periphery to be chopped. With every peripheral chop , pie shaped quadrant after quadrant is achieved, and the hard cataract is divided into many small quadrants. The splits are all half thickness or less. They might either meet in the center or leave a central undivided small quadrant in between. The small quadrants are then individually phacoemulsified.
