Amniotic Membrane Transplantation in Ocular Surface Disorders: Our Experience

Sudesh Arya

Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT ) in ocular surface disorders (OSD).

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 79 eyes of 76 patients udergoing AMT for OSD was done.

Results: The mean age was 36.16± 13.9 yrs. Single layered AMT was done in patients with persistent epithelial defects (PED) (23), infectious keratitis (12), neurotrophic ulcer(11), chemical injuries(4), conjunctival reconstruction after pterygium excision(4), exposed Ahmed glaucoma valve (4), Biopore implant after enucleation (1), ocular surface neoplasia (2) and forniceal reconstruction after symblepharon (9) eyes. PED and infiltrates decreased in size and healed faster. Multilayered AMT done in perforated corneal ulcer(5) and corneal fistula (1) was helpful in healing of ulcer and fistula.

Conclusion: Amniotic membrane provides growth and differentiation factors and helps in ocular surface disorders by promoting epithelialization and reducing inflammation.
