Management of Peripheral Ulcerative Keratitis: Our Experience

Purpose: To study various causes and final outcome of PUK.

Methods: A reterospective study of 33 eyes of 27 patients with PUK was conducted. They were managed either by medical treatment or by various types of surgical interventions. The follow up was for a minimum period of 3 months.

Results: There were 22 (81%) males and 5 (19%) females. The various causes of PUK were infective; 18 patients, Moorens ulcer, systemic tuberculosis, staphylococcal allergy; 2 patients each, Wegeners granulomatosis, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis; 1 patient each. Thirteen patients could be managed conservatively. Seven patients were put on autologus serum drops additionally. Surgical interventions required were TPK, scleral patch graft, BCL and glue; one each while10 patients underwent localized conjunctival peritomy. The final visual outcome was between 6/6-6/12 in 16 patients and 6/18-6/36 in 8 patients.

Conclusion: PUK represents varied spectrum of corneal disorders; which if managed properly and timely; can give excellent visual outcome.
