Clinical Features and Prevention of Ocular Injury by Superglue inadvertently used as eyedrops

Purpose: To investigate the clinical features and preventions of ocular injuries associated with superglue inadvertently used as eyedrops.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was undertaken of a ll ophthalmic casualty cards at the Dongguk University Gyeongju Hospital between January 2002 and November 2004. The age, gender and treatment requirements of each patient, and the cause of superglue used as eyedrops were recorded. Each patient had a thorough slit lamp examination.

Results: 15 eyes of 13 patients were identified. Ankyloblepharon, stucking of eyelashes and corneal abrasion were presented and all patients had resolved without complications. The most cause of ocular injuries has been attributed to patient carelessness. Another cause was poor eyesight and children use without supervision.

Conclusions: Considering many preventations to decreased of ocular injury due to superglue used to eyedrops; keeping medicines and superglue separate, having distinctive bottle shaping and color, and using safety caps.
