Purpose : To compare the effect of Folic acid (FA), Extract Ginkgo Biloba (EGb), and Methyl Cobalamin (MC) to Apoptotic Index (AI) and Caspase 3 expression of retinal ganglion cell induced by methanol intoxication (MI).
Methods: Experimental study was conducted in Pharmacology and Biomedic laboratory of Brawijaya University for two weeks. Fiveteen rats were included, and devided into five groups: (a) control, (b) MI only, (c) FA 1 mg day per os, (d) EGb 50 mg/kb per os, and (e) MC 500 microgram/ kg intraperitoneally for three days. MI were done by giving methanol 4 g /kg in first day, and 2 g/kg for two days after. Apoptotic Index and Caspase 3 expression were assessed by immunohistochemistry. The ANOVA test was used for statistical comparison.
Results : In AI evaluation, we found that IM group has a difference compared with AF ( p=0.030 ), EGb (p=0.080 ), and MC group ( p=0.208 ). In the other hand, there were a decreasing of caspase 3 expression in FA ( p=0.005 ), EGb ( p=0.008 ), and MC group ( p=0.151 ) compared with MI group.
Conclusions : FA gives the most greatest decreasing on caspase 3 expression and AI. EGb can also decrease AI and significantly in caspase 3 expression. MC have no effect for both variable.
