Purpose : To assess morphological changes of the retina in occult macular dystrophy (OMD) by using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
Methods: Retrospective observational study. We evaluated the findings of SD-OCT in five patients who had a normal ocular examination and low voltage in multifocal electroretinograms. Central foveal thickness (CFT) and outer nuclear thickness (ONT) in OMD was measured and compared to that in normal volunteers.
Results: The mean CFT and ONT in the patients were 143.2 μm ± 20.2 (SD) and 80.3μm ± 15.73 (SD) and significantly thinner than those in 35 normal volunteers. The intermediate line between layers of the retinal pigment epithelium disappeared in all eyes of the patients.
Conclusion: The photoreceptor cells including the outer segment are affected in the eyes with OMD. OCT findings are valuable to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and elucidate the pathogenesis of OMD.
