Purpose: To report a rare case of primary corneal melanoma.
Method: Case report
Case: A 58 year old Indonesian man presented with a growth in the left eye associated with diminished vision of 5 year duration. Examination revealed a fleshy pigmented lesion over the temporal aspect of the left cornea. Excision biopsy of the lesion was done and the patient was then treated with topical Mitomycin C 0.02% eye drops.
Results: Histopathological examination revealed features in keeping with primary acquired melanosis with atypical melanocytic hyperplasia (mild atypia).
Conclusion: Although very uncommon, possible diagnosis of primary corneal melanoma should be considered in cases with pigmented lesions of the cornea sparing the limbus and conjunctiva. Treatment with surgery and Mitomycin C is proving to be an effective form of management as demonstrated in this case.
