The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of endonasal endoscopic monitoring in previously failed probing operated for congenital dacryostenosis. Failed probing is usually caused by false passage formation. Other causes include the presence of nasal pathology like polyps, impaction of the inferior turbinate against the nasolacrimal duct opening, or complex obstructions.

Methods: In this study, 20 congenital dacryostenosis cases belonging to 17 children were included. Their ages ranged from 15-51 months. All cases have been subjected to a previous probing at least once. Re-probing with endonasal endoscopic monitoring was performed under GA with endotracheal intubation using a 2.7 mm rigid fibreoptic telescope with 0°, 30°, 45°, & 70° scopes. Improvement in symptoms was evaluated both subjectively & objectively. Success rate reached 95% by this technique at 3 months postoperatively.

Conclusion: The current study showed that endonasal endoscopic monitoring was very helpful in determining the cause of failure in cases of failed previous probing. It helped in identifying the cause of obstruction, in ensuring the right passage of the probe, & in treating any nasal pathology.
