Surgery technique in lower eyelid trichiasis
Lucieni Ferraz
PURPOSE: To characterize the clinical and pathologic features of lower eyelid trichiasis and to report a surgery technique (Ferraz technique).
METHODS: A prospective study evolving lower eyelid trichiasis carriers operated following a new surgical procedure was done at Hospital Estadual Bauru, Brazil. The patients were included in the year 2009 and 2010. All of them had the affected anterior lamella resected and the margin eyelid was reconstructed using advanced graft composed of orbicularis muscle and adjacent skin. The specimes removed were histologically evaluated. The patients were observed 7, 30 and 60 days after surgery.
RESULTS: The procedure was done in 14 lower eyelids of 14 patients (8 men, 6 women; age range, 56-98 years; mean age 71, 21 years old. The histology exam showed elastosis, actinic keratosis and chronic blepharitis. The outcome of all patients were considered achievable and well succeeded.
CONCLUSIONS: The technique gives good anatomical success and no one recovered the misdirected eyelashes. So, the authors agree this is a very good option to correct trichiasis.
