Purpose: To investigate the clinical course and to know when we can decide the secondary surgical correction for consecutive esotropia and recurrent exotropia after intermittent exotropia.
Methods: The 728 patient who underwent surgical treatment for X(T) between 2004 and 2009 with a minimum postop. follow -up of 1 yr were enrolled.
Results: The mean age at the time of first surgery was 7.7yrs and we found that 663 pts(91.1%) had an orthotropia, whereas 44 pts(6.0%) who had a consecutive esotropia and 21 pts.(2.9%) of those who had a recurrent exotropia underwent secondary surgery. Consecutive esotropia patient showed the constant esodeviation over 10PD in compared with orthotropia group after 2mos postoperatively. At the 6mos postoperatively 17 of 21 pts (81%.0%) with recurrent exotropia showed the orthotropia, whereas all need secondary surgical correction showed the constant exodeviation over 18PD after 18mos postoperatively.
Conclusions: Secondary surgical correction is considered when esodeviation over 10PD is persisting after 2mos postoperatively for the binocularity. Furthermore, the postoperative follow-up of 18mos is required for the recurrent exotropia at least.
