Low Vision Devices; Our Experience

Purpose: Low vision devices are very useful for rehabilitating people with incurable cause of low vision.

Methods: It was a retrospective analysis of 64 patients who were prescribed low vision devices in our clinic.

Results : There were 64 patients needing low vision devices. There were 5 (7.8%) patients below 20 years, 6(9.4%) patients between 20-40 years, 22(34.3%) patients between 40-60 years and 31(48.5%) patients more than 60 years of age. The indications for low vision devices were optic atrophy 29(45.3%), retinitis pigmentosa15(23.4%), Age related macular degeneration13(20.3%), Myopic degeneration 03(4.7%) and Diabetic retinopathy 04(6.3%). LVA's prescribed were ; Near vision devices with 6X magnification 27(42.2%), Hand held magnifiers 3.5X 8(12.5%), binocular spectacle mounted telescopic lenses for near ( NV2) 11(17.2%), binocular spectacle mounted telescoping lenses for distance 7(10.9%), monocular hand held telescopic lenses 11(17.2%).

Conclusion: Low vision devices definitely help the people with low vision in performing their routine activities in day to day life.
