Objective To investigate the clinical features of fellow eyes in Chinese patients with unilateral exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Methods Two hundred and five (205) consecutive cases diagnosed with exudative AMD by both fluorescein angiograph (FFA) and indocynine green angiograph (ICGA) between 2003 and 2008 at Beijing Tongren Hospital were retrospectively reviewed.
Results One hundred forty seven (147) cases had unilateral involvement of exudative AMD, of which 131 had choroidal neovascularization (CNV), 14 had polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), and 2 had RAP. Large drusen in fellow eyes were seen in 32 ( 24.4%) cases with CNV, 4 (28.2%) cases with PCV and 1 patient with RAP. Pigment abnormality in fellow eyes was seen in 41 (31.3%) cases with CNV, 6 (42.9%) cases with PCV, and 1 patient with RAP. No statistically significant differences in the proportion of large drusen or pigment abnormalities between CNV and PCV groups were observed.
Conclusion Unilateral cases with CNV or PCV had similar clinical features in the fellow eye in Chinese.
