Purpose: To investigate relationship between fixation point and photoreceptor integrity in eyes with macular hole using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).

Methods: We included 24 patients who had macular hole and had undergone SD-OCT evaluation using scanning protocols for 128 B-scans (512 A-scans per B-scan) in an area of 6mm×6mm. Fixation point was defined as the center of the scans. The amount of deviation in fixation point from the anatomical macular center was calculated. It was compared with those of normal eyes. The photoreceptor integrity was compared between fixation point and anatomical macular center.

Result: Fixation point was more deviated from anatomical macular center in eyes with macular hole than in normal eyes. Photoreceptor integrity of fixation center was better than those of anatomical macular center even after macular hole surgery.

Conclusion: During the examination using SD-OCT fixation point could be related with photoreceptor integrity in eyes with macular hole.
