Purpose : To report a case of bilateral endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Pantoea agglomerans in a patient who had interstitial lung disease and treated with systemic
corticosteroid.
Methods : A 72-year-old man presented with decreased visual acuity in both eyes. He had marked uveitis, cataract and vitreous opacity. Blood, aqueous humor and vitreous cultures were performed. Initially we suspected fungal origin and treated him with antifungal drugs but the intraocular disease progressed without improvement. The pathogen was proved to be P. agglomerans by the culture of specimens that were obtained from the aqueous humor and vitreous. He underwent pars plana vitrectomy with cataract surgery in both eyes, followed by a 2-week course of antibiotics.
Results : The final visual acuity of the right eye was 20/25 and the left eye was 20/200.
Conclusions : This is the first report of bilateral endogenous endophthalmitis caused by P. agglomerans in Korea also the first case outside of the United States.
