Purpose: To evaluate the results of retinal reattachment surgery for patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) virus with retinal detachment associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in pre and post HAART (Highly active anti- retroviral therapy) era.
Methods: Retrospective, interventional case series at a tertiary care ophthalmic center in India.
Results: There were 12 eyes each in pre and post HAART group. The mean postoperative survival was lower pre HAART era. Both the groups had total retinal reattachment rate i.e. 83%and a macular attachment rate of 100% in single surgery. Two eyes each in both groups showed proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) changes. There was no significant difference in reattachment rate and post operative visual gain in two groups. In post HAART eyes, additional surgical procedures like cataract surgery were required for visual rehabilitation.
Conclusion: There was no difference in the outcome of the re attachment surgery in pre and post HAART era group except for additional surgical procedures in post HAART group due to increased survival rate.
