Visual acuity after cataract surgery with toric IOL vs conventional IOL + opposite clear corneal incisions
Olga Martinez
Purpose: To compare the result of astigmatism correctioin after cataract surgery with toric IOL´S conventional IOL´s + opposite clear corneal incisions.
Methods: 22 patients distribuited in 2 groups. Each group of patients was operated by the same surgeon. The mean preoperative astigmatism in the toric IOL´s group (SN 60 T5) was 2.66D. The mean preoperative astigmatism in the conventional IOL´s group + opposite clear corneal incisions was 2.29D.
In both groups the defocus equivalent was analized.
Results: Three months after the surgery, the group with toric IOL´s had a postoperative mean astigmatism of 0.80D. The group of conventional IOL´s + opposite clean corneal incisions had a mean postoprative astigmatism of 1.20D. The defocus equivalent in the toric IOL´s group was 0.41 and in the conventional IOL´s + opposite clear corneal incisions group was 1.05.
Conclusions: Toric IOL´s correct more astigmatism than opposite clear corneal incisions. When the postoperative astigmatism is equivalent, the visual acuity is better in the group of toric IOL´s as they have less defocus equivalent.
