Purpose: To find the risk factors that are associated with the recurrence after pterygium excision surgery
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed charts of 100 eyes that underwent pterygium excision surgery and that are followed up at least 6 months. In all cases, exposed area was covered with conjuctival autograft or amnionic membrane transplantation(AMT) or conjunctival autograft with AMT. Preoperative morphologic factors, operation methods, and adjunctive treatments were statistically analyzed if they were related with the recurrence after pteryigum excision.
Results: 16 eyes(16%) showed recurrence. In univariated and multivariated analysis, conjunctival autograft was the only significant factor that could reduce the recurrence.( P=0.006, odds ratio 7.284, 95% confidence interval ; 1.79~29.62)
Conclusions: Conjunctival autograft is an effective method to reduce the recurrence after pterygium excision. Preoperative morphologic features and the other adjunctive treatments are not associated with the recurrence.
