Methods:This was a prospective observational case series study consisting of 96 patients with NAION and 80 normal subjects.
Result:With OCT images the morphological characteristics of optic disc and cup and the normal value ranges was obtained. In NAION group. All ONH measurements were significantly different between normal and observational groups. there was a negative correlation between the incidence of NAION in patents with the depth of its optic cup. The thickness of nerve fiber layer of retina around optic disc were 52.91±27.64um temporal,98.95±42.27um superior,51.50±25.89um nasal,114.50±42.68um inferior compared show a significant difference with that in second eyes were 152.41±15.51um temporal,149.27±23.96um superior,95.44±12.14um nasal,114.50±42.68um t ,with that in normal control eyes were 95.57±17.63um temporal,144.17±18.98um superior,99.00±28.13um nasal,155.53±18.65um. Contralateral eyes group has no statistical significance with control croup in RNFL thickness in quadrants respectively. In fellow-up, 12 affected eyes were recurrence in clinic observation, and the recurrence rate was 0.125. 44 second eyes occurred in the follow-up, the incidence of contralateral eye was 45.8%
Conclusion: Optic cup-disk in NAION patients are smaller than that of the normal by quantitatively assess method on OCT images. This preexisting morpholophy of little or no cup may play an important role in the pathogenesis of NAION particularly.
