Orbital tuberculosis – A case series

Purpose: To report three cases of orbital tuberculosis.

Methods: Prospective interventional study done at oculoplasty clinic of National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital and Harun Eye Hospital from July 2007 to May 2010.

Results: Three male patients aged 61, 28 and 30 years had been diagnosed as a case of orbital tuberculosis during this period. All these patients presented with unilateral orbital growth. CT scan was done prior biopsy. After histopathological confirmation evaluation was done for evidence of systemic tuberculosis. All the parameters were normal including MT and X-ray chest. Patients were treated with anti-TB drugs along with systemic steroid. One patient was presented with recurrence. So further biopsy was done and treated with long course of anti-TB drugs. On subsequent follow up the patients were cured.

Conclusion: Orbit and periorbital involvement of Tuberculosis is rare. Though our country is an endemic zone for pulmonary TB, sometimes diagnosis is delayed and short course of anti TB therapy is sufficient. But long course of anti-TB therapy with steroid is often needed to prevent recurrence of orbital TB.
