Purpose: To investigate the relevance of stromal cell-derived factor-1(SDF-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the vitreous and serum in the patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Methods: The volumes of SDF-1 and VEGF in the vitreous and serum were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Twenty-seven patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) constituted in DR group, and thirteen healthy adult men who were died by accident were in control group. The results were analyzed by SPSS17.0 software.
Results: The vitreous concentration of SDF-1 is significantly higher in eyes with PDR(188.64±91.57pg/ml)than that in control group(62.00±19.84pg/ml, P<0.001). The vitreous levels of VEGF is also significantly higher in the eyes with PDR(1848.99±1240.89)pg/ml, than that in control group (98.80±37.88pg/ml,P<0.001). The vitreous concentration of SDF-1 correlated significantly with that of VEGF in eyes with PDR(correlation coefficient r=0.559, P<0.005). The serum concentration of SDF-1 in PDR group was significantly higher (1136.69±510.50pg/ml),compare to the control group(551.30±168.23pg/ml,P<0.001). The vitreous concentration of SDF-1 correlated significantly with the serum level of SDF-1 in patients with PDR (correlation coefficient r=0.583, P<0.001). The serum concentration of VEGF in group PDR was significantly higher (214.30±109.20pg/ml),compare to the control group(83.52±32.56pg/ml,P<0.001). The vitreous concentration of VEGF correlated significantly with the serum level of VEGF in patients with PDR(correlation coefficient r=0.558, P<0.005).
Conclution: Vitreous and serum levels of SDF-1 and VEGF in patients with PDR are significantly higher than those of nondiabetic patients. SDF-1 may be correlated with VEGF in angiogenesis of PDR.
