Outcomes of Surgery in 47 patients of Giant Retinal Tear (GRT)

Purpose: To analyze outcomes of surgery for giant retinal tear (GRT).
Methods: A total of 47 patients presented with giant retinal tear (GRT) were included in the study. Pars plana vitrectomy with encirclement and internal tamponade of silicon oil was done in all 47 patients of giant retinal tear(GRT).
Study was conducted at department of Ophthalmology Lahore General Hospital, Lahore from 2002 to 2010.
Results: Out of 47 cases of GRT, surgery was successful in 30(63.8%) patients . In 17(36.1%) patients surgery failed, of which 13(76%) patients were less than 20 years old.
Conclusion: High incidence of poor surgical outcome of vitrectomy for GRT in patients of young age group.
