The anterior surface of the vitreous is attached to the posterior lens capsule in a circular zone approximately 8 mm in diameter (Wieger's ligament). Central to this is a potential space (Berger's space) lying anterior to the residual structures of the primary vitreous. The remaining primary vitreous constitutes Cloquet's canal with funnel-shaped openings anteriorly behind the lens (space of Erggelet) and posteriorly over the optic nerve head (space of Martegiani). The vitreous is adherent to the eyewall in the region of the vitreous base, along the margins of the optic nerve head and surrounding the fovea.
