To report the long-term follow up of patients with primary iris epithelial cyst.
Material and Methods: We describe the clinical characteristics, natural course and treatment results of these patients retrospectively.
Results: In the 18-year period from 1987 to 2005, six consecutive patients (4 males and 2 females) with ages at the initial visit ranging from 7 to 45 years (mean, 28.5) were enrolled in this study. The distribution of the cysts was in the anterior chamber (1 patient), posterior chamber (4 patients) and vitreous cavity (1 patient). Three patients received Argon or YAG-laser photocystotomy due to vision disturbance, secondary glaucoma and progressive enlargement of the cysts which occurred separately. The cysts collapsed following treatment and no complication was noted and no recurrent sign showed till now. The condition of the rest of patients remained silent and no size and configuration change in the follow-up period.
Conclusions: Primary iris cysts should be monitored carefully for its enlargement and/or other complications, such as inflammation and shallow anterior chamber. Laser treatment for iris cysts has satisfactory results after long-term follow up in this study.
