Purpose: To identify the clinical risk factors for anatomic failure in conventional rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery in patient with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) grade B.
Materials and Methods: Retrospective review of 435 eyes in 429 Chinese patients who underwent conventional RRD surgery. The results were analyzed by univariate analysis with U-test.
Results: Anatomic reattachment of the retina was achieved in 394(90.6%) eyes after a single surgery and in 433 (99.5%) eyes after a second surgery, with a mean follow-up period of 41.1±18.3 months (range, 6~93 months). Factors in the vitreous status predictive of anatomic failure were vitreous condensation, vitreous traction and combination vitreopathy (P < 0.05). Factors in the PVD status predictive of anatomic failure were incomplete PVD and complete PVD (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Pre-operative identification of the vitreous and PVD status is important as they are the risk predictors for anatomic failure in conventional scleral bucking RRD surgery.
