Purpose. To report on a functional restitutio ad integrum after treatment of exudative age-related macular degeneration.
Design. Interventional case report.
Methods. A 70-year old patient received an intravitreal injection of 1.5 mg bevacizumab as treatment of a retinal pigment epithelium detachment due to age-related macular degeneration.
Results. After the intravitreal bevacizumab application, visual acuity increased from 20/125 to 20/20, parallel to a resolution of subfoveal fluid as shown by optical coherence tomography. Ten weeks after the injection, the patient experienced an increase in metamorphopsias, and optical coherence tomography revealed a re-increase of macular edema. Visual acuity declined slightly to 20/25. After a second intravitreal bevacizumab injection (1.5 mg), metamorphopsias regressed and optical coherence tomography demonstrated further resolution of the subfoveal fluid. At the end of follow-up, visual acuity was 20/20.
Conclusions. Repeated intravitreal injections of bevacizumab may lead to a complete and temporary restoration of visual acuity.
