Objective:Cytokines released by type 1 T-helper cells are thought to play a pivotal role in uveitis.Interleukin (IL)-18 is a proinflammatory cytokine which plays a crucial role in T helper (Th)1 type immune response. This study was performed to investigate whether the serum levels of IL-12, IL-18, and IFN-γ were associated with the manifestation of acute uveitis. Methods: Serum cytokine levels were measured by sandwich ELISA in 31 patients who underwent acute uveitis and 19 healthy controls. Result: Serum levels of IFN-γ、IL-18 and IL-12 from patients of uveitis were significanctly higher than normal contrast (P<0.01). A significant correlation was found between serum IL-18 and IL-12
levels of patients (rs = 0.63, P < 0.01). Conclusion : Increased levels of IL-18 may contribute to the pathogenesis of uveitis. Increased levels of IL-18 also support Th1 predominance in acute uveitis.
