The History of Taiwan Ophthalmological Society

OBJECTIVE: To present the history of Taiwan Ophthalmological Society.
METHODS: Collect published document from Taiwan Ophthalmological Society and from the bulletin of  Taiwan medical association.
RESULTS: Taiwan Ophthalmological Society (TOS) was first founded on May 15,1960.TOS is the most organized and exemplary institute of ophthalmology in Taiwan.After founded, owing to the elaboration of the first president professor Yen-Fei Yang and other following presidents, including Chen-Wu Chen, Liang-Shi Ko, Jorn-Hon Liu, Te-Tsaw Chen, Por-Tying Hung, Wen-Ming Hsu, Chih-Chin Pan, there are many outstanding achievements in both clinical and academic fields. The numbers of society’s member has surged from the initial 107 in 1960 to a total of 1654 in 2010.  In addition to annual meeting (from 1960 to 2010, totally 51 times), the society had held some big international ophthalmic conferences, including (1) the18th Congress of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, APAO 2001;( 2) the second global Chinese Ophthalmic Conference, GCOC 2002; ( 3) the 7th international symposium on myopia, 1998; (4) the 5th Congress of Asia Society of Neuro-ophthalmology; (5) 1st to 14th Taipei International Symposium on Current Ophthalmology 1997-2010 ; (6) 4 times of Taiwan-Japan joint meeting on ophthalmology; (7) the 4th Congress of Asia Pacific Vitreoretinal Society ; (8) 1st Asia Glaucoma Joint Congress . Taiwanese ophthalmologists have attended ICO since 1966 ( the 22nd ICO Congress) for 10 times and APAO since 1960 ( the 1st APAO Congress) for 23 times.  The society published Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology quarterly for 51 years (since 1961), 6 bulletins yearly for 30 years (since 1981) and 12 monographs.  In academic research, the focus of research by Taiwanese ophthalmologists primarily encompasses epidemiology, stem cell study, glaucoma, vitreo-retinal surgery, neuro-ophthalmology and alternative medicine. A total of 1542 papers have been published between 1998 and 2010, of which 486 have been published in SCI journals.
CONCLUSIONS: In the past 51 years, Taiwan Ophthalmological Society  has shown her energetic achievement in the academic field and social events.
