Purpose To investigate the microstructure characters in traumatic hypotony maculopathy detected by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
Methods This was an observational non-comparative case series comprising of 20 patients (20 eyes) with hypotony maculopathy after ocular contusion. All patients underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examination including SD-OCT. Images were analysed by two retina specialists masked to clinical findings.
Results Most patients were male (95%) with a mean age of 32 ± 14 years (range 11–59 years). The average mean IOP was 9.75 ± 3.97 mmHg (range6.4 –19.8 mmHg). The visual acuity ranged from HM to 1.0 . Three grades of hypotonic maculopathy was idenfied, inner limiting membrane folding (7 eyes), retinal folding and retinal thickening (10 eyes) and choroidal folding (3 eyes).
Conclusion The characters of traumatic hypotonic maculopathy included folds in internal limiting membrane, sensory retina and retinal piement epithelium. SD-OCT is helpful in identifing these abnormalities. The intraocular pressure recovered normal when examination.
