Objective To determine conjunctival epithelial thickness, conjunctival stromal thickness, and total conjunctival thickness in older adults using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Patients and Methods  120 subjects (46 males and 74 females), aged 60 – 80 years were enrolled. A Cirrus HD-OCT 4000 was used to scan the lower temporal conjunctiva 3 – 5 mmfrom the corneal limbus. Subjects were divided into two groups according to age (1: 60 – 70 years old; 2: 71 – 80 years old). Conjunctival epithelial thickness, conjunctival stromal thickness, and total conjunctival thickness then were compared
between the two groups.
Results  Mean conjunctival epithelial thickness (49.36±6.46 µm), conjunctival stromal thickness (145.79±30.30 µm), and total conjunctival thickness (195.93±32.76 µm) differed significantly between groups
(p=0.0017, p<0.0001 and p<0.0001, respectively).
Conclusion This study demonstrates the feasibility of in vivo conjunctival thickness measurement using OCT. The conjunctiva thins as part of normal aging.
