Purposes: To analyze the preoperative characteristics of orthokeratology patients at one of the principal eye centers inChina.
Methods: The preoperative characteristics of 986 eyes of 554 children who had undergone an orthokeratology procedure during 2010-2011 were studied. Standard examinations including subjective refraction, intraocular pressure, corneal topography, corneal endothelium, A ultrasonic, IOL Master and wavefront aberration were measured .The analysis covered sex, age, degree of myopia, and flat Sim-K.
Result: Among of all patients, 49.39% (487/986) of eyes of orthokeratology patients were myopia with spherical equivalent (SE) between -2.00D and -4.00D, 32.96% (325/986) with SE between -0.50D and -2.00D, and 17.65% (174/986) with SE between -4.00D and -6.00D respectively. 48.74% of patients were boys. The majority of orthokeratology patients were children with 10-13 years old. 51.12% of patients’ flat Sim-K was within 42.00D-44.00D. 65% of patients were from the same city as our eye center. The ratio of orthokeratology to glasses fitting for correction for children’ myopia at the same time at our center was one to fifty.
Conclusion: At our eye center inChina, the great majority of orthokeratology patients are children with 10-13 years old, myopia lower than -4.00D, flat Sim-K within 42.00D-44.00D and from neighbouring our eye center city convenient for follow-up visits. These characteristics of patients were important factors in contributing to the safety, efficacy, and predictability of orthokeratology for children inChina.
