Purpose.
To investigate the effect of age on pupil size and pupilary light reflex in humans using EWP software, a component of the Oculus Keratograph topographic system.
Methods. Pupil diameters of 160 subjects (age range, 17 to 78 years) with normal, healthy eyes were measured using an objective infrared-based continuous recording technique. Pupil size in scotopic environment and pupilary light reflexes after two standardized stimulus modalities (Pupillogram and Anisocoria) were measured by Oculus Keratograph.
Results. Pupil size decreased linearly as a function of age at scotopic environment. Even after photostimulations (Pupillogram and Anisocoria), there were still significant effects of age upon pupil size and the extent of reaction. The age had a typical negative correlation with the pupil parameters mentioned before (Pupillogram Min, p=0.00; Pupillogram Max, p=0.00; Pupillogram Range, p=0.00; Anisocoria Min, p=0.00; Anisocoria Max, p=0.00; Anisocoria Range, p=0.00). Pupil size was found to be independent of gender (Pupillogram Min, p=0.06; PupillogramMax,p=0.54;PupillogramRange,p=0.30;AnisocoriaMin,p=0.14;AnisocoriaMax,p=0.90;AnisocoriaRange,p=0.16).
Conclusions. The chronologic age had a significant effect on the size of the pupil and the pupil reflex induced by a photic stimulus. The EWP software of Oculus Keratograph topographic system can be use in measurement of pupil reflex.
