| Fumintide Cures Choroidal Neovascularization in Laser Injury cynomolgus monkeys |

| BCKGROUND Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a central role in the development of retinal neovascularization and diabetic macular edema. There is also evidence suggesting that VEGF is an important stimulator for choroidal neovascularization in aged macular degeneration(AMD). Fumintide (Kanghong Co. Chengdu, P.R.China) is a humanized antibody-liked molecule designed to bind VEGF.This protein was suggested to supress the neovascularizations.
PURPOSE. To study the efficacy of intravitreal injections of fumintide on experimental choroidal neovascularization in the cynomolgus monkey eyes.
METHODS. Choroidal neovascularization was induced by laser injury as 5-7 ruptures per eye of Bruch’s membrane in both eyes of cynomolgus monkeys Photography and fluorescein angiography were carried out three weeks later and followed with an intravitreal injection of fumintide(640 ug/eye) into the left eye,and the same volume PBS in to the right one. Fluorescein angiograms were taken out a week later.
RESULTS. There were strong fluoroscein leakage was seen in some laser injury spots of the both left and right eye in the first fluorescein angiography.But in the second fluorescein angiography, stronger fluoroscein leakage was seen in laser injury spots for the PBS control eye, but in the fumintide treated group,there was almost no fluorescein leakage was seen in laser injury spots that had strong fluorescein leakage before.
CONCLUSIONS. This study demonstrates that fumintide has a strong efficacy for curing choroidal neovascularization in the monkey laser injury model, and profiles its clinical use in treating neovascular AMD .
