Purpose:
To evaluate the clinical outcomes, pre-operatively pachymetry and influence of k-readings versus flap-thickness in LASIK with the FDA-approved SCHWIND Carriazo-Pendular.
Methods:
In this study 120 eyes were analyzed. All treatments have been performed with the FDA-approved SCHWIND Carriazo-Pendular and the 110 µm cutting head. Two blades per Patient were used and all eyes were healthy and untreated with a corneal thickness of 500 µm to 600 µm and a k-reading of 41.2 D to 47.5 D. To evaluate the flap-thickness and Standard Deviation (SD) an ultrasonic Pachymeter was used. To evaluate the pre-Op k-reading and pre-Op Pachymetry versus flap-thickness a scattergram in Excel was used.
Results:
Postoperative excellent flap qualities and a constant flap-thickness’ were shown with an extreme low standard deviation (SD) of 11 µm and a mean flap-thickness of 113 µm. The scattergram showed no coherence between the Pre-Op Pachymetry versus k-reading.
Analysing only steep corneas the SD mean flap-thickness increases.
Decreasing the range of pre-Op corneal thickness from 500 – 580 µm results in a lower SD.
Conclusions:
The Carriazo-Pendular shows excellent results with a very low Standard Deviation. A change of 2D k-reading leads to a change in flap-thickness of approximately 5 µm. A change of pre-OP cornea thickness leads to a change in flap-thickness. The Pendular Microkeratome cuts predictable thin flaps without complications.
