| Purpose: Toxoplasma infection is one of the most common causes of uveitis. The seropositivity varies widely, and with little information in human in Taiwan.
Methods: The sera of 274 consecutive patients seen in the uveitis clinic of Taipei Veterans General Hospital between June 2005 and June 2006 were screened for toxoplasmosis IgG.. Patients with typical manifestation of ocular toxoplasmosis were excluded. Detection of was performed by enzyme-linked fluorescence assay.
Results: The average age of patients was 41.313.4 years. 126 patients (46.0%) were male and 148 (54.0%) were female. Sixteen patients (5.8%) were found to be positive for toxoplasma IgG in the total 274 patients, that including 5 patients (7.5%) in 67 patients with Behcet’s disease, 2 patients (4.3%) in 46 patients with HLA-B27 uveitis, 2 patients (7.4%) in 27 patients with sarcoidosis, 1 patient (3.8%) in 26 patients with scleritis, 1 patient (5.3%) in 19 patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada’ disease, 1 patients (9.1%) in 11 patients with herpetic keratouveitis, 3 patients (6.4%) in 47 patients with undetermined type of uveitis, and 1 patient (3.6%) in 28 patients with other types of uveitis. There is no statistically significance in the patterns of uveitis, genders and ages.
Conclusions: The seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis among patients with uveitis was relatively low, and there was no significant association with specific type of uveitis. Further investigation to compare the result with normal population was required to clarify the role of toxoplasmosis in the development of uveitis other than ocular toxoplasmosis.
