Purpose: To investigate the relationship between myopia and changes in ocular biometry and macular thickness in young adults.Methods: Two hundreds and sixteen eyes from 108 adults (23.3 ± 6.3 years old, Mean ± SD) underwent retinoscopy, keratometry and ultrasonography. Macular thickness was measured in 118 eyes (59 subjects) by optical coherence tomography (OCT). All eyes were divided to 4 groups (emmetropia, low, moderate and high myopia) with all parameters statistically compared between the groups. Linear correlation between refraction and other parameters was analyzed for each group. Results: The vitreous length (VL) in the emmetropia group was significantly shorter than any of the myopic groups (p < 0.001). The VL was greatest in the high myopia, followed the moderate myopia and finally the low myopia (p < 0.001 between any 2 myopia groups). Average thickness of the inner and outer ring macula in the emmetropia group was significantly thicker than any of the myopia groups (p < 0.05). Among different macular regions, the inferior quadrant of the inner and outer rings thinned most consistently with the myopic development. There was no significant difference in corneal radius of curvature among the 4 groups.Conclusions: Myopia in young adults is associated with an increase in VL and a decrease in para-foveal thickness. The region inferior to the fovea appears more susceptible to thinning in response to myopic development than the other regions. |
