Aim: To identify the main causes of blindness and low vision among Thai patients attending the Integrated Government Service to People Project during 2007 and 2008.
Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, eye screening was done for consecutive patients attending the Integrated Government Service to People Project. The main outcome measures were blindness and low vision in accordance with the World Health Organization criteria.
Results: Of 2894 patients attending the project, 332 (11.5%) were blind and/or had low vision; 57 (39.3%) had bilateral blindness, 88 (60.7%) had unilateral blindness, 64 (34.2%) had bilateral low vision and 23 (65.8%) had unilateral low vision. Cataract was the most frequent cause of visual loss (44.3%) followed by glaucoma (8.1%) and diabetic retinopathy (6.3%).
Conclusions: Cataract was the main cause of blindness and low vision among Thai people. As cataract is a surgically treatable disease, with cooperation, support, and surgical training, Thai blindness and low vision can be alleviated. Rapid assessment of cataract surgical services will have the greatest impact on alleviating visual impairment in Thailand. |
