OBJECTIVE: To identify possible factors affecting to obtain better visual acuity after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) surgery with silicone oil tamponade for traumatic endophthalmitis. METHODS: 121 patients (121 eyes) with traumatic endophthalmitis undergone pars plana vitrectomy were retrospectively reviewed. Those with comparably severe vitritis were administered with silicone oil tamponade or lensectomy simultaneously. Patients’ demographic studies were performed, from which the analysis of possible factors influencing the improvement of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) postoperatively was studied. RESULTS: 113 patients obtained improved BCVA after surgery, including 98% patients received PPV within 24hrs, 96% patients got laceration less than 10mm, and 96% patients having present visual acuity better than LP. More than 90% patients with severe endophthalmitis obtained improved BCVA after silicone oil tamponade or lensectomy treatment. 53 specimens were cultured positively and most of micro-organisms were identified as nonvirulent ones. CONCLUSION: The good outcomes of visual acuity for post-traumatic endophthalmitis are related to timely treatment, prompt vitrectomy surgery, shorter length of laceration, isolation of nonvirulent micro-organisms, better presenting visual acuity, and the use of silicone oil or removing the lens if necessary. |
