Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of heparin-surface-modified (HSM) polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) intraocular lens (IOL) in preventing posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after cataract extraction. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods Pertinent studies were selected through an electronic search of the Cochrane Library, Medline, and Embase. The randomized controlled trials meeting the pre-defined criteria were systematically reviewed by meta-analysis. The treatment effects were measured as risk difference and the pooled estimates were computed according to a random effect model. Results A total of 12 randomized controlled trials were included in the present meta-analysis. The pooled risk difference of the PCO rates was 0.04 (-0.04 to 0.11) when comparing HSM PMMA IOLs with unmodified PMMA IOLs. The pooled risk difference of the use rates of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was -0.11 (-0.23 to 0.02) when comparing HSM PMMA IOLs with unmodified PMMA IOLs. Conclusions The HSM PMMA IOL appears to be as effective as conventional unmodified PMMA IOL in preventing the formation of PCO and reducing the use of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. |
