Purpose To evaluate the 10 incidence of pterygium and its associated factors in an adult Chinese population of Greater Beijing. Methods The Beijing Eye Study, a population-based incidence study, included 2695 (60.76%) of 4439subjects living in a rural area or urban region of Greater Beijing, 50+ years of age, invited to participate. The participants underwent a standardized examination protocol including corneal photography. Results A pterygium was detected in 166 (3.1%) eyes of 138(5.12%) subjects. Risk factors is rural areas, protect factors are long period of reading and high level of glucose Conclusions The 10 year incidence of pterygium in Greater Beijing is 5.12% among Chinese >50 years of age. Independent associated with living in the rural versus urban region,relative long period of reading and negtive correlation with the level of glucose. |
