Purpose: To report one Chinese case with cornea Salzmann’s nodular degeneration.
Methods: The patient, 54 years-old female, complained of a recurrent red, painful and blurring left eye for about 3 years, and was clinically diagnosed as Salzmann’s nodular degeneration (OS). Superficial keratectomy combined with amniotic membrane transplantation was performed. After surgery, bandage contact lens, topical steroid, artificial tears, and antibiotics were applied. Visual acuity, slit-lamp examination, and As-OCT were performed before and after surgery.
Results: Before surgery, we found white sub-epithelial nodules distributed on the slight edematous cornea of the left eye, the size of which were 1 to 2 mmor even larger at the fusion area. Corneal fluorescence staining was positive on the lesion positions. The visual ability of the left eye was 0.2, and As-OCT demonstrated the prominent lesions were confined to epithelium and Bowman’s membrane, without infiltration into stroma or deeper layers. One week after surgery, the patient recovered a transparent cornea of the left eye, with epithelium healed and fluorescence staining negative, and the visual ability were 0.2, one reason of which may be amniotic membrane patch remaining on the central cornea. The re-examination of As-OCT found a smooth cornea surface without detected lesions.
Conclusions: Superficial keratectomy combined with amniotic membrane transplantation can be considered as an effective surgical alternative for cornea Salzmann’s nodular degeneration. |
