PURPOSE:To evaluate the therapeutic effects andsurgical techniques of Artisan aphakic intraocular lens implantation for subluxated lenses in 16 patients (25 eyes) with Marfan syndrome (MFS).
METHODS:In this retrospective study, 25 eyes of 16 patients with subluxated lenses due to MFS accepted lens aspiration, lens capsule removal, Artisan IOL implantation, and peripheral iridectomy between December 2007 and July 2010 in our hospital. The indications for surgery were reduced visual acuity and monocular diplopia. The followed parameters were best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and endothelial cell counts, AC IOL position, and occurrence of complications. The average follow-up period was 6.0 months (range3-14 months).
RESULTS:Visual acuity improved in 23 of 25 eyes; 2 eye had no change. The symptoms of monocular diplopia disappeared. Mean endothelial cell loss was 5.4% 6 months postoperatively. 2 eyes developed high IOP temporarily.
Retinal detachment was observed postoperatively in 1 eye. No significant postoperative complications were observed.
Conclusion Artisan aphakic intraocular lens implantation for subluxated lenses is a kind of effective technique for recovering vision and monocular diplopia as far as possible. Studies with a larger number of patients and longer follow-up are necessary to confirm these results.
